3 Reasons Why Public Speaking is Important


Communication is the backbone of our society. It allows us to form connections, influence decisions, and motivate change. Without communication skills, the ability to progress in the working world and in life, itself, would be nearly impossible. Public speaking is one of the most important and dreaded forms of communication. Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the most common fear people have across the globe.

It’s easy to be the student that sits in the back of the classroom and never raises his or her hand to avoid such situations in primary school. Public speaking, on the other hand, is an important ability to have and hone in the workplace. It has a huge impact on your career path and level of success in your field, and it affects ordinary, everyday interactions between coworkers, supervisors, and employees, marketing professionals and clients, and so on.


There are many reasons why public speaking is necessary, but we believe the following three are the most important:

  1. To Persuade the Audience

Persuasion, or the ability to win over the crowd, is a crucial skill to have in business and especially in public relations. Persuasion can take you far both within and outside the workplace, and it all starts with refining your public speaking skills. When you master public speaking, you gain confidence and, with it, a calm and composed demeanor in front of an audience. Of course, you must be informed on the issue at hand, but while giving a persuasive speech of any kind, including a sales pitch to a customer, you must also be prepared to respond to the opposition and speak with composure.

To establish a convincing case, the ability to speak in public is not only beneficial but also necessary for progress. For example, in order to persuade a publishing editor that a given product or idea would be an attractive topic, one needs to use strong, convincing language to elicit excitement and curiosity. A compelling pitch will entice the customer or editor to want to learn more. When presenting an idea or an argument for or against something to an audience, public speaking allows you to convey your point in a captivating and convincing manner.

  1. To Inspire and motivate People

A great public speaker has the ability to persuade an audience to do something, stop doing something, change a behavior, or achieve goals. However, you must be able to inspire and enliven your peers, employees, coworkers, and consumers in order to move an idea forward.

Leaders who can motivate their audience to strive harder to attain their objectives are known as public speakers. As a public speaker, your job is to sway your audience and create an atmosphere where everyone is ready to go. You’re not just giving a speech to persuade your audience to do something; speakers are involved in the action and may transmit their enthusiasm and motivation.

It is not enough to simply be aware of the topics at hand; you must also persuade your audience to share your enthusiasm. Elections have been won solely on the basis of one candidate’s superior public speaking ability. Being knowledgeable is crucial, but more importantly, being able to raise enthusiasm in your audience through good public speaking will inspire them to act. When people talk about having a voice in the world, they’re referring to making an impact on it by expressing your ideas and information in a fun way. You can relate to the audience and acquire their trust by mastering public speaking. As a great public speaker, you will become likable and credible, and you will be able to persuade others to trust you.

  1. To provide information

One of the most crucial parts of public speaking is the ability to inform. Informative public speaking is an important part of a successful career in any sector, from presenting research papers and PowerPoint presentations in school to presenting ideas and pitches to your supervisor or client.

An excellent informative speech sharing your knowledge of a subject with an audience boosts their understanding and makes them remember your words long after you’ve finished once you’ve gained their attention. For example, you may be requested to train a group of coworkers on how to use new computer software or to give a presentation to your staff on corporate events. This type of public speaking can be used to give demonstrations or to share an area of expertise.


“Oral communication abilities were the number one skill that college graduates felt useful in the professional sector,” according to research by sociologist Andrew Zekeri. Communication skills improve your capacity to deal professionally and calmly with professionals and coworkers. These skills are enhanced by public speaking, making you a more qualified candidate to advance and thrive in your chosen career.

I only mentioned 3 reasons why public speaking is a must-have skill, however, there are more reasons which I will write about in future posts. These three advantages make stepping out of your comfort zone and giving a speech well worth your time. The first few times you speak, you’ll be apprehensive, but you’ll rapidly learn to appreciate the experience.
